The Airports unit study is a four-week, theme-based curriculum designed for children ages 5–8, built around the world of aviation and air travel. It takes kids on a journey through everything that makes an airport tick — from the terminals and runways they can see, to the air traffic controllers and ground crews working behind the scenes. Each week builds on the last, moving from the basics of how an airport is laid out all the way through to big-picture thinking about global aviation and the future of flight.
The first two weeks focus on foundations. Week one introduces kids to the key areas and vocabulary of an airport — gates, taxiways, security checkpoints, hangars — while week two zooms in on how everything actually works: the sequence of a departure, the history of aviation from the Wright Brothers to the Airbus A380, and the parts that make an airplane fly. Science sneaks in naturally here through the four forces of flight and how jet engines produce thrust.
Weeks three and four widen the lens. Kids explore airports from around the world, compare passenger volumes through graphing activities, and read about some of the most remarkable airports on the planet — from the mountain-hemmed runway at Paro in Bhutan to the indoor waterfall at Singapore's Changi. The final week looks ahead, introducing concepts like electric aircraft, sustainable aviation fuel, and urban air mobility, encouraging children to think about how the skies might look in their lifetime.
Throughout all four weeks, academic skills are woven into every activity. Math shows up in runway number conversions, word problems, and measurement worksheets. Language arts comes through noun identification, sequencing exercises, and cause-and-effect reading passages. There's also a strong creative thread — kids design their own airports, roleplay as air traffic controllers, and finish the unit with a showcase presentation. A printable board game, two bingo boards, sorting cards, and a completion certificate round out the experience, making it as hands-on and varied as the airports it celebrates.
