Discovering Bees and Pollinators introduces young learners to the extraordinary world of the tiny creatures that make most of our food possible — the bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, and hoverflies that transfer pollen between flowers and keep the world's ecosystems alive. Over four weeks, children explore the biology, behaviour, and breathtaking diversity of pollinators through rich informational content, engaging activities, and creative projects designed specifically for ages 5–8.
The unit weaves together science, reading, mathematics, and creative exploration in a way that feels natural and exciting. Children discover how a honey bee communicates the location of flowers to her hive-mates through the waggle dance, how flowers use colour, scent, and shape to attract specific pollinators, how a butterfly tastes with her feet before deciding where to lay her eggs, and why the decline of pollinator populations is one of the most urgent environmental challenges facing humanity today. The science of the pollinator world is simultaneously intimate and global — and this unit captures both scales with equal enthusiasm.
Each week builds on the last — from the foundational question of what a pollinator actually is and why it matters, through the biology and adaptations of individual species, to the role pollinators play in ecosystems and agriculture worldwide, and finally to the conservation challenges and solutions that children themselves can be part of. Along the way children practise counting, addition, measurement, reading comprehension, vocabulary, sorting, classification, and creative thinking — all in the context of one of nature's most important and most threatened communities.
Activities include vocabulary bingo with pollinator terms, a sorting activity distinguishing different types of pollinators and their characteristics, a timeline tracing the history of bees and pollination science from ancient honey hunters to modern conservation efforts, a matching game pairing pollinators with the flowers and adaptations they are associated with, a movement math lab inspired by the waggle dance, flower foraging, and metamorphosis, and a creative design activity where children design their own pollinator garden. The unit closes with a board game review and a showcase presentation, giving children the chance to share everything they have discovered about the remarkable creatures that quietly keep our world alive.
