How to Choose Topics Your Kids Will Love

The secret to successful unit studies starts with picking the right topic

Back to Homeschool Resources

The foundation of a great unit study is a topic your child genuinely cares about. But with so many options, how do you know which one will spark that magical learning spark? Let me share what has worked for our family.

After years of trial and error, I've discovered that the best topics come from watching what naturally captures my children's attention. Here's how to find that perfect topic for your next unit study.

5 Ways to Discover Your Child's Interests

1. Listen to Their Questions

Pay attention to what your child asks about throughout the day. "Why is the sky blue?" "How do sharks find food?" These questions are goldmines for unit study topics!

2. Watch What They Read or Watch

What books do they grab at the library? What shows or videos do they gravitate toward? If they're watching dinosaur documentaries, that's your cue!

3. Notice Their Play

What do they pretend to be? What themes appear in their imaginative play? A child who always plays "space explorer" might love a space unit study.

4. Ask Directly (But Get Creative)

Instead of asking "What do you want to learn about?" try "If you could be any animal for a day, what would you be?" or "What job do you think would be the most fun?"

5. Look at Upcoming Seasons & Events

Is a holiday coming up? A new season? A local event? Sometimes the best topics tie into what's happening in your family's life right now.
