What is this unit study about?

Discovering Castles & Knights transports young learners back to the Middle Ages — a world of towering stone fortresses, armored warriors, royal courts, and epic sieges that shaped the history of the modern world. Over four weeks, children aged 5–8 explore the fascinating people, places, and events of medieval life, from the king sitting in his great hall to the young page training in the castle courtyard who dreams of one day becoming a knight. This unit makes history vivid and exciting through hands-on activities, movement, creative projects, and rich informational content that brings the medieval world to life.

At the heart of the unit is a deep dive into castle architecture and design. Children learn the purpose of every feature of a medieval castle — why moats prevented undermining, what murder holes were used for, how a portcullis worked, and why round towers eventually replaced square ones. They explore the difference between a castle and a palace, discover how castle design evolved over five centuries in response to new siege weapons and technologies, and design their own castle complete with defensive features and a named ruling family. A dedicated cause and effect reading activity traces the entire arc of castle history — from the first wooden motte-and-bailey structures built by William the Conqueror in 1066, to the arrival of gunpowder that made thick stone walls suddenly obsolete.

The journey of a knight from childhood to knighthood is another highlight of the unit. Children sequence the stages of a knight's training — from arriving at a lord's castle as a seven-year-old page, through years of grueling practice as a squire, to the solemn overnight vigil in the chapel and the formal dubbing ceremony where a sword touch on each shoulder transformed a young man into a knight sworn to uphold the code of chivalry. A castle zone sorting activity then places all the people of the medieval world — the lord and lady, the blacksmith, the cook, the chaplain, the squire, the sentry, and the village serfs — into the correct part of the castle where they lived and worked.

Geography and history are woven throughout. A famous castles sorting activity introduces children to real castles from around the world — the Tower of London, Conwy Castle in Wales, Neuschwanstein in Germany, Himeji Castle in Japan, Mehrangarh Fort in India, and Krak des Chevaliers in Syria — building an early awareness that castles were built not just in medieval Europe but across the entire world. A timeline activity covers the full arc of castle history from the 900s to the present day, including the role of the Crusades in introducing new architectural ideas to European builders.

Math and literacy skills are embedded in every week. Children practice counting and number recognition through the Roll & Cover Shield Numbers game, identify nouns in a richly detailed medieval reading passage, solve addition word problems set in castle and siege contexts, and read and interpret a bar graph of castle facts. The unit closes with the Storm the Castle! board game and a culminating showcase presentation, giving children the chance to share their favorite castle facts and demonstrate everything they have discovered about the extraordinary world of medieval fortresses and the knights who defended them.
