Discovering America's National Parks introduces young learners to the most ambitious conservation idea the United States has ever produced — the decision, beginning with Yellowstone in 1872, to set aside the most spectacular, most irreplaceable, and most ecologically significant landscapes in the nation and protect them forever from development, exploitation, and destruction, so that every generation of Americans yet to come would be able to stand at the rim of the Grand Canyon, walk among the giant sequoias, watch Old Faithful erupt on schedule, and understand in their bones what this continent looked like before human industry reshaped it. Over four weeks, children explore the history, geography, ecology, and extraordinary diversity of America's national parks through rich informational content, engaging activities, and creative projects designed specifically for ages 5–8.
The unit weaves together ecology, geology, geography, conservation science, American history, reading, and mathematics in a way that brings the vast landscapes of the national park system to life at the kitchen table. Children discover how the Grand Canyon was carved over five million years by the Colorado River cutting through two billion years of exposed geological history — the most complete rock record on Earth — how Old Faithful erupts with such remarkable regularity because of a specific configuration of underground plumbing that channels superheated water from the Yellowstone magma chamber to the surface on a precise schedule, how the giant sequoias of Yosemite and Sequoia national parks are not just the largest living things on Earth by volume but among the oldest — some having germinated before the Roman Empire existed — how the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone in 1995 triggered a cascade of ecological changes so profound that it altered the course of rivers, how the Everglades functions as a single slow-moving river of grass fifty miles wide and just inches deep, and why the national park system — often called America's best idea — remains one of the most important and most visited conservation achievements in the history of the world. The science of America's national parks is a story of geology, ecology, evolution, and the complex relationship between human beings and the wild landscapes they depend on — and this unit brings that story to young learners with richness, accuracy, and a genuine sense of adventure.
Each week builds on the last — from the foundational question of what a national park is and why the idea of protecting wild land was so radical when it first emerged, through the most iconic parks and the geological forces, ecological communities, and extraordinary wildlife that define each one, to the history of the American conservation movement and the remarkable men and women — John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, Ansel Adams, and many others — who fought to create and protect the park system, and finally to the challenges facing national parks today — climate change, overcrowding, invasive species, and the ongoing tension between preservation and access. Along the way children practise counting, addition, measurement, reading comprehension, vocabulary, sorting, classification, and creative thinking — all set against the backdrop of the most spectacular landscapes in North America.
Activities include vocabulary bingo with ecology, geology, and conservation terms, a sorting activity placing national parks into their correct geographic regions and ecosystem types, a timeline tracing the history of the American conservation movement from the first European settlers' encounters with the wilderness to the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916 and the environmental legislation of the twentieth century, a matching game pairing national parks with their most famous features, wildlife, and geological formations, a movement math lab inspired by hiking, wildlife spotting, geyser watching, rock climbing, and the Junior Ranger oath, and a creative design activity where children design their own national park complete with location, ecosystem, flagship species, geological features, and visitor experience. The unit closes with a board game review and a showcase presentation, giving children the chance to share everything they have discovered about the wild, the beautiful, and the irreplaceable landscapes that America has chosen to protect for all time.
