Discovering Roller Coasters is a 4-week unit study that takes young learners on a thrilling journey into the science, history, and engineering of one of the most exciting inventions in the world. Through structured lessons and engaging hands-on activities, children explore how roller coasters work, how they are designed and built, and what forces of nature make every drop, loop, and turn possible — all while building foundational academic skills across reading, writing, math, and physical science.
The unit covers core early elementary science concepts including gravity, potential and kinetic energy, g-forces, and centripetal force. Children discover why roller coasters do not need engines after the first lift hill, why riders stay in their seats at the top of a loop, and how engineers carefully calculate every detail of a ride to create maximum excitement within safe limits. The science is presented through rich reading passages, a movement math lab where children experience the physical sensations of drops, inversions, and brake runs with their own bodies, and a cause and effect activity that connects the forces of physics directly to what riders feel.
History and geography are woven throughout the unit as well. A timeline activity traces the story of roller coasters from the ice slides of 17th-century Russia through the Golden Age of wooden coasters to the record-breaking steel giants of today. Sorting activities introduce children to famous coasters from across North America, Europe, and Asia, grouped by type, thrill style, and location — giving children a vivid sense of just how global and varied the world of coasters really is.
The unit also introduces the engineering design process in an age-appropriate and genuinely detailed way, walking children through every stage from concept sketch to opening day. A matching game connects coaster features to their engineering purposes, and a creative design activity invites children to design their own original roller coaster complete with height, speed, special features, and a science explanation. By the end of the four weeks, children will have a confident understanding of the physics and engineering behind roller coasters, and will have completed a showcase presentation and earned a certificate of completion.
