Discovering Dragons takes young learners on a journey through one of the most extraordinary mysteries in all of human culture — why did every civilisation on Earth, from ancient China to medieval Europe, from the Americas to Aboriginal Australia, independently invent the dragon? Over four weeks, children explore the mythology, history, science, and storytelling traditions of dragons across cultures and centuries through rich informational content, engaging activities, and creative projects designed specifically for ages 5–8.
The unit weaves together world mythology, cultural history, biology, physics, reading, and mathematics in a way that is simultaneously intellectually rich and genuinely magical. Children discover how dinosaur fossil discoveries in China and Europe almost certainly inspired the dragon traditions of those regions, why evolutionary psychology suggests that humans are hardwired to fear — and therefore to invent — creatures combining the features of snakes, big cats, and birds of prey, how the chemistry and physics of fire breathing would actually work in a living creature, and why the dragon appears in more human stories, across more cultures and more centuries, than any other imaginary animal. The dragon is not just a myth — it is a window into the deepest layers of the human imagination, and this unit opens that window wide.
Each week builds on the last — from the foundational question of what a dragon actually is and why every culture seems to have one, through the rich diversity of dragon traditions from fourteen different cultures around the world, to the most famous dragons in literature and film and what makes each one memorable, and finally to the enduring question of why the dragon — of all the creatures humanity has ever imagined — has never gone away. Along the way children practise counting, addition, measurement, reading comprehension, vocabulary, sorting, classification, and creative writing — all in the context of the most beloved and enduring creature in the history of human storytelling.
Activities include vocabulary bingo with mythology and dragon terms, a sorting activity distinguishing Eastern from Western dragon traditions and their characteristics, a timeline tracing dragon mythology from ancient Mesopotamia to modern film and literature, a matching game pairing famous dragons with their cultures and stories, a movement math lab inspired by dragon flight, fire breathing, treasure hoarding, and the hero and dragon confrontation, and a creative design activity where children design their own original dragon — complete with cultural tradition, physical description, special powers, and dragon egg. The unit closes with a board game review and a showcase presentation, giving children the chance to share everything they have discovered about the most magnificent, most mysterious, and most universal creature the human imagination has ever conjured.
