Discovering Outer Space is a four-week, Level 1 unit study designed for children ages 5–8. This curriculum uses space exploration as the backdrop for building foundational academic skills across math, language arts, science, and critical thinking.
Each week introduces a new theme. Week 1 lays the groundwork by introducing children to what outer space is — covering the planets, basic space vocabulary, and key figures like astronauts. Week 2 shifts to space history and famous missions, walking children through major milestones from Galileo's early telescope all the way to modern Mars rovers. Week 3 explores the different types of stars, planets, and space objects, as well as the people who study them, with a focus on what it takes to become an astronaut. Week 4 brings it all together by diving into missions and the broader universe, culminating in a student-led presentation where children showcase everything they've learned.
Throughout the unit, children practice counting, addition, and graphing through space-themed math activities; strengthen reading and writing skills using informational passages about astronauts and space missions; develop scientific reasoning by sorting and classifying planets, stars, and other celestial objects; and build confidence through hands-on creative projects like designing a space suit and drawing scenes from famous missions.
The curriculum is designed to be flexible and low-prep, allowing parents to move at their child's pace, skip or repeat activities as needed, and adapt lessons for different learning levels. Every activity includes easier and harder variations to meet each child where they are.
