What is this unit study about?

Discovering Pets is a 4-week unit study that introduces young learners to the animals we share our homes and lives with — from loyal dogs and clever cats to colorful fish, singing birds, gentle rabbits, and more. Through structured lessons and engaging hands-on activities, children explore the science, history, and responsibility of pet ownership while building foundational academic skills across reading, writing, math, and life science.

The unit covers core life science concepts including animal classification, domestication, and the needs and behaviors of different types of pets. Children learn how dogs were domesticated from wolves over 15,000 years ago, how cats began living alongside humans in ancient Egypt, and how a wide variety of animals — from reptiles and amphibians to birds and small mammals — have become beloved companions around the world. Sorting and classification activities help children group pets by animal type and by care need, building scientific thinking and vocabulary along the way.

Responsibility and empathy are woven throughout the unit as a natural theme. Children explore what it really means to care for an animal — the daily routines, the emotional needs, and the lifelong commitment involved — through reading passages, sequencing activities, and cause and effect analysis. A matching game connects popular pets to their wild ancestors, and a timeline activity traces the history of famous animals from ancient history through to internet-famous pets of today.

The unit also includes a creative design activity where children invent their own imaginary pet, a movement math lab built around real pet care actions, and a culminating showcase presentation. By the end of the four weeks, children will have a rich understanding of pets as living creatures with real needs and feelings, and will have built confidence in reading, writing, math, and scientific thinking along the way.
