Discovering Electricity introduces young learners to the invisible force that powers the modern world — the flow of electrons through conductors that lights our homes, charges our devices, drives our motors, carries our communications, and underlies every heartbeat, every nerve signal, and every thought in the human brain. Over four weeks, children explore the science, history, and extraordinary applications of electricity through rich informational content, engaging activities, and creative projects designed specifically for ages 5–8.
The unit weaves together physics, chemistry, biology, history of science, engineering, reading, and mathematics in a way that makes the invisible visible and the abstract genuinely exciting. Children discover how atoms and electrons create the conditions for electrical flow, how a simple circuit works and what happens when it is broken, how batteries store and release chemical energy as electrical energy, how the war of currents between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla shaped the electrical grid that powers the world today, how lightning is produced by the build-up of static charge in storm clouds and discharged in a bolt reaching temperatures five times hotter than the surface of the Sun, and how the human nervous system uses electrical signals to carry messages from the brain to every part of the body at speeds of up to 120 metres per second.
Each week builds on the last — from the foundational question of what electricity actually is and where it comes from, through the history of electrical discovery and the extraordinary scientists who unlocked its secrets, to the remarkable diversity of electrical applications from power stations and solar panels to computers and the human nervous system, and finally to the future of electricity — renewable energy, electric vehicles, smart grids, and the ongoing challenge of powering a growing world without destroying the climate that sustains it. Along the way children practise counting, addition, measurement, reading comprehension, vocabulary, sorting, classification, and creative thinking.
Activities include vocabulary bingo with physics and electrical engineering terms, a sorting activity distinguishing conductors from insulators and different energy sources from one another, a timeline tracing the history of electrical science from ancient Greek observations of static electricity to the development of the modern power grid and beyond, a matching game pairing famous scientists and inventors with their electrical discoveries and inventions, a movement math lab inspired by electron flow, lightning strikes, circuit building, and the hum of a generator, and a creative design activity where children design their own renewable energy powered home complete with energy sources, appliances, and a circuit diagram. The unit closes with a board game review and a showcase presentation, giving children the chance to share everything they have discovered about the most powerful, most pervasive, and most essential force in the modern world.
