Discovering Weather and Storms

Discovering Weather and Storms introduces young learners to the extraordinary science of the atmosphere — the invisible ocean of air that surrounds our planet, drives our climate, feeds our crops, shapes our landscapes, and occasionally reminds us, with breathtaking force, exactly who is in charge. Over four weeks, children explore the science, patterns, and power of weather through rich informational content, engaging activities, and creative projects designed specifically for ages 5–8.

The unit weaves together meteorology, earth science, physics, reading, and mathematics in a way that feels immediate and relevant — because weather is the one science every child experiences every single day. Children discover how the water cycle moves moisture from ocean to cloud to rain and back again, how a thunderstorm builds from a warm summer afternoon into a towering cumulonimbus, how meteorologists use data and technology to predict the weather days in advance, how a tornado forms from the collision of warm and cold air masses, and why some parts of the world get monsoons while others get blizzards and others get almost no rain at all. The science of weather is simultaneously local and planetary — and this unit captures both scales with clarity and wonder.

Each week builds on the last — from the foundational question of what weather actually is and what causes it, through the most dramatic and powerful weather events on Earth, to the patterns and systems that govern climate across different regions of the world, and finally to the relationship between human activity, climate change, and the weather patterns that future generations will inherit. Along the way children practise counting, addition, measurement, reading comprehension, vocabulary, sorting, classification, and creative thinking — all framed by the endlessly changing sky above their heads.

Activities include vocabulary bingo with meteorology terms, a sorting activity distinguishing different types of weather events and their causes, a timeline tracing the history of weather science from ancient sky-watchers to modern satellite technology, a matching game pairing weather phenomena with their scientific explanations, a movement math lab inspired by lightning strikes, tornado spins, blizzard trudges, and sunshine stretches, and a creative design activity where children design their own weather station. The unit closes with a board game review and a showcase presentation, giving children the chance to share everything they have discovered about the remarkable, powerful, and endlessly fascinating science of the sky.
